Yibing Wu is playing well at the US Open and went close in his only match against Carlos Alcaraz. I am avoiding the short odds on Alcaraz here and backing at least one tie break in New York.

Wu Serving Strong in New York

Yibing Wu has not been a factor on the ATP Tour this year, going 8-9 and reaching one quarter-final in Acapulco.

The 26-year-old failed to qualify in Cincinnati and lost 6-3 6-4 to Francisco Comesana in the first round in Winston Salem.

Wu hasn’t lost a set at the US Open, starting with a 7-6 6-2 7-5 win against Adam Walton. He thrashed James Duckworth 7-5 6-3 6-1 in under two hours, winning 78% of his 2nd serves and not allowing a break point.

Alcaraz Back in Action

Carlos Alcaraz won the Australian Open, Qatar Open and got to the semi-finals in Indian Wells. He went close to defending his title in Monte Carlo, beaten by Jannik Sinner in the final.

The Spaniard hurt his wrist in Barcelona and spent four months recovering, missing the French Open and Wimbledon.

The World No.3 had a strong start at the US Open, beating Roman Safiullin 6-4 6-4 6-4 after hitting 28 winners and 27 unforced errors.

Alcaraz came home strong to defeat Jaime Faria 4-6 6-0 6-3 6-2, winning 70% of his 2nd serves and saving 5/7 break points.
The 23-year-old discussed how he was able to turn it around against the Portuguese player: “The first set, I was feeling great, had a break point and a pretty easy forehand for me that I missed.”

“I was in a rush. I didn’t take time. I wasn’t patient. That cost me the break. Against someone like Jaime, he’s serving like 140 (mph), every serve is really difficult.”

"After that, I just tried to be focused and stay calm and think that good things are going to happen again.”
