Rafael Jodar has fallen behind in all three matches in Shanghai where he has saved 15/18 break points. I think his luck is going to run out against Casper Ruud who has caught fire in China.

This will be the first match between Rafael Jodar and Casper Ruud.

Jodar Running out of Steam?

Rafael Jodar has been a huge improver this year, rising from 165 into the Top 20. He won the title in Marrakech, reached the final in Washington and got to the semi-finals in Montreal.

The Spaniard has shown some signs of fatigue however, starting with an incomprehensible 6-2 6-1 6-1 first round defeat to Bu Yunchaokete at the US Open. He lost 6-1 6-3 to Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in his opening match in Tokyo.

The 20-year-old has fallen behind in all three matches in Shanghai but turned it around on each occasion. He got past Thiago Agustin Tirante 4-6 6-2 6-3, Jiri Lehecka 4-6 7-6 6-4 and Botic van de Zandschulp 6-7 6-4 6-2, saving 15/18 break points in China.

Ruud Finding Form in Shanghai

Casper Ruud went 17-6 on clay, reaching the final in Rome where he lost to Jannik Sinner. A fourth round defeat to Joao Fonseca in the French Open fourth round started a poor run of form.

The 27-year-old came to Shanghai after losing six of his previous 11 matches.

The Norwegian’s serve hasn’t been broken in Shanghai. He beat Bu Yunchaokete 6-1 7-6, Learner Tien 6-4 7-6 and was leading 5-2 when Felix Auger Aliassime retired.

Verdict

Rafael Jodar is the favourite in Shanghai despite dropping the first set in all three matches. I don’t think the early odds are correct here so I am backing Casper Ruud.
