Zverev Takes Top Spot
It has been a historic year for Alexander Zverev, reaching three Grand Slams finals. He won the French Open, US Open and lost to Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon.
The 29-year-old was last seen in Beijing where he beat Cameron Norrie and Juncheng Shang in straight sets. He was looking good in the quarter-finals before going down 4-6 6-4 6-4 to Novak Djokovic.
The German eased past Yibing Wu 6-4 7-6 in his opening match in Shanghai but it hasn’t been as easy since. He beat Quentin Halys 6-4 6-7 6-3 and Alexander Bublik 7-6 4-6 7-6 and has saved 1/4 break points at the event.
Zverev took the World No.1 spot this week and spoke about the achievement: “It’s a different sort of feeling. As the World No.1, you have a responsibility on your shoulders, but I’m looking forward to that.
“I’m close to being 30 years old. It’s a special feeling for me to achieve that at my age. It’s definitely been a special couple of hours, that’s for sure.”
De Minaur Entrenched in the Top 10
Alex de Minaur has been below his best on the hard court swing but remains in the Top 10. He gained some confidence at the Laver Cup where he beat Alexander Zverev.
The Australian battled his way to the Beijing final last week, coming back to beat Quentin Halys and Andrey Rublev in 3 sets. He was leading 6-4 3-2 when Hubert Hurkacz retired but retired himself at 7-6 0-1 down to Novak Djokovic.
The 27-year-old had a walkover in Shanghai where he hasn’t lost a set and saved all three break points. He got past Rei Sakamoto 7-6 6-4 and Karen Khachanov 6-3 6-4, winning over 62% of his 2nd serves.
