Penrith Panthers vs Brisbane Broncos Verdict

The Panthers should win but they have been given a -14.5 handicap to cover. The Broncos appeal to stay within that and surpass their team total in the process.

  • Brisbane's poor defensive run explains why Penrith are such heavy favourites, but it also creates line inflation. The Broncos can lose by 12 or 14 points and still cash the spread.
  • The Broncos have averaged 17.8 points over their last five despite a brutal form slump, and their attacking ceiling lifts with Walsh, Mam and Reynolds all named.
  • Penrith have the NRL's top-ranked points attack and run-metre profile, but Origin and injury returns can still make margin control messier than the market suggests.
  • Casey McLean returns into a premium attacking role at centre, facing a Broncos defence ranked 14th for points allowed and 16th for run metres conceded.

Head to Head Stats

Penrith have won six of their last seven against Brisbane, including the 26-0 result back in Round 1.

The Panthers are also undefeated at CommBank Stadium this year, so the venue and recent matchup history both lean their way.

Penrith Panthers Form - Mixed Form For Panthers

Penrith have gone 3-2 over their last five, but the numbers are still elite.

They have averaged 30.8 points scored and 15.4 conceded in that stretch, and they sit first in points, first in run metres and second in linebreaks across the season.

The Panthers can grind teams down with territory before opening them up late, and that is the obvious danger for Brisbane.

Brisbane Broncos Form - Eight Defeats In A Row

Brisbane have lost eight straight and the defensive numbers are ugly, with the Broncos conceding 34 points per game across that skid.

Their last five tell the same story, with 17.8 points scored and 31.6 conceded per game, and they rank 14th for points allowed.

The reason to keep them onside is personnel. Walsh, Mam, Reynolds, Haas, Carrigan and Piakura all return, which gives Brisbane back their attacking shape and enough middle strength to avoid being completely bullied.
