Jodar Closing in on Top 10
Rafael Jodar has risen from 165 to 11 in the rankings this year, winning the title in Marrakech and reaching the Barcelona semi-finals.
The Spaniard has gone 10-2 since returning to hard courts, reaching the final in Washington where he lost to Taylor Fritz. He had a short turnaround in Montreal, beating two Top 15 players before a semi-final defeat to Brandon Nakashima.
The 19-year-old looked down and out in his opening match in Cincinnati, trailing Denis Shapovalov 5-1 in the third set and saving a match point on his way to a 7-5 4-6 7-5 victory.
Jodar had no such issues in the third round, crushing Alejandro Tabilo 6-2 6-1 in 75 minutes.
Flavio Cobolli won the title in Acapulco and went close in Munich, beating Alexander Zverev on his way to the final where he lost to Ben Shelton.
The Italian met Zverev again in the French Open final, keeping it close before going down in 5 sets.
The 24-year-old went on another deep run at Wimbledon, reaching the quarter-finals where he suffered a shock defeat to Arthur Fery. It was the start of a poor run of form, losing his opening matches in Umag and Montreal.
The World No.10 hasn’t done it easy in Cincinnati, defeating Miomir Kecmanovic 6-1 4-6 6-3 and Alexander Blockx 7-5 4-6 7-5, saving a combined 12/17 break points.
