Finland and the Czech Republic meet in the knockout stage after very different endings to the group phase at the Ice Hockey World Championship 2026. The Finns arrive with strong momentum despite their final-round defeat, while the Czechs struggled against stronger opposition and now face a difficult challenge.
Finland Impressing Throughout the Group Stage
Finland enjoyed an excellent run in the first phase of the Ice Hockey World Championship 2026, finishing 2nd in Group A with six victories and just one defeat.
The Finns won their opening six matches against Germany 3-1, Hungary 4-1, United States 6-2, Latvia 7-1, Great Britain 4-0 and Austria 5-2.
That impressive streak came to an end in the final-round showdown for top spot, losing 4-2 to tournament hosts Switzerland. Finland fell behind 2-0 after just two minutes, then responded with two unanswered second-period goals through Aleksander Barkov, but ultimately still ended up short.
Jesse Puljujarvi has been Finland’s standout performer so far with four goals and four assists.
Czech Republic Searching for Stability
Czech Republic’s confidence took a hit after ending the group phase with two consecutive defeats and dropping to 3rd place in Group B with 13 points.
Their first major setback came in the second round where they suffered a shock 3-2 overtime defeat against underdog Slovenia, but they responded with three straight victories over Sweden 4-3, Italy 3-1 and Slovakia 3-2 before another disappointing 4-1 loss against Norway.
In the final round, the Czechs put up decent resistance against gold medal favorites Canada but still lost 3-2 after throwing away a two-goal lead.
