Canada are tipped to cover as they win this quarter-final matchup.

The Canadians cruised through the group stage, while this weak United States group scraped through by the skin of their teeth and lost to all three teams that finished ahead of them.

Key Numbers – Can Canada Go 8-0 At World Championship?

  • United States lost 3 times during the group stage
  • All 3 of United States’ defeats were by at least 2 goals
  • 5 of Canada’s 7 group games produced over 5.5 goals

  • United States won 2-1 in overtime when the two teams last met on February 22

Canada Were Perfect 7-0 In Group Stage

Canada advanced to the knockout stage by winning all seven of their matchups in Group B.

The Canadians came into the tournament as favourites to win it all, and they opened with a 5-3 victory over Sweden.

They then shutout Italy in a 6-0 victory, before downing Denmark 5-1 and Norway 6-5 to keep themselves firmly on course of the knockouts.

Canada then saw off Slovenia, 3-1, and Slovakia, 5-1, to wrap up the top spot in Group B.

The Canadians were not done there though, as they wrapped up a perfect group campaign with a 3-2 victory over Czechia.

United States Scraped Through With Four Wins

The United States scraped into the quarter-finals by winning their final two games in the group stage to finish 4-3.

The USA came into the tournament as reigning World and Winter Olympics champions, but a weakened roster meant making it three straight tournament wins would be tough.

They got off to a miserable start as they lost 3-1 to Switzerland in a rematch of last season’s final, and they then failed to build on a 5-1 blowout of Great Britain as they lost 6-2 to Finland.

The United States responded with a 4-3 win over Germany, but a surprise 4-2 loss to Latvia left them staring an early elimination in the face.

America rallied though, backing up a 7-3 rout of Hungary with a 4-1 success against Austria to snatch a spot in the knockout stage.
