The United States have experienced everything at the World Cup, from early success to a 40 year absence. Their best finish in the modern era came in 2002 when they lost 1-0 to Germany to in the quarter-finals.
In Qatar 2022, the Stars and Stripes got through the group stage unbeaten, drawing with England and Wales before defeating Iran.
They met their match in the Round of 16, suffering a 3-1 defeat to a Netherlands side that went on to reach the semi-finals.

The Road to 2026 - Mixed Results
The United States received automatic entry as co-hosts. They got to the 2025 Gold Cup final in July but couldn't close it out in Texas, going down 2-1 to Mexico.
Friendly results in late 2025 were encouraging, including a 2-0 victory over Japan, 1-1 draw against Ecuador and 5-1 thrashing of Uruguay.
Mauricio Pochettino's side have continued to test themselves against top quality opposition this year, beginning with a 5-2 defeat to Belgium and 2-0 loss against Portugal.
The Stars and Stripes returned to action in Charlotte where Folarin Balogun's late goal secured a 3-2 win against against Senegal. One more friendly is scheduled, against Germany in Chicago on 6 June.
The Manager - Mauricio Pochettino
Following a string of disappointing performances in major tournaments, a statement was made in September 2024 with the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino.
The former Southampton, Tottenham, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea boss represented an upgrade who was tasked with taking the side to new heights.
He is yet to guide the USA to a title, going out to Panama in the CONCACAF Nations League semi-finals and Mexico in the Gold Cup final.

Mauricio Pochettino has assembled a dynamic squad with plenty of experience in the top European leagues.

Chris Richards: Richards enters the World Cup as the anchor of Mauricio Pochettino's defense, fresh off a trophy-winning season with Crystal Palace. His experience, tactical intelligence and aerial dominance makes him a key player.
Tyler Adams: Adams will be a crucial midfield anchor for the USA due to his elite defensive work rate and ability to disrupt opposition attacks.
Weston McKennie: The energetic engine can play in almost any position and his experience at Juventus adds a touch of class to Pochettino's side.
Christian Pulisic: Pulisic had a strong start to the season at AC Milan but couldn't find the net in 2026. He provided a goal and an assist in the recent 3-2 win against Senegal to show why he remains foundational to the team's attacking output.

Group D Schedule and Path to the Final
The United States have been given a relatively easy path to the knockout round. Victories against Paraguay and Australia will be expected before ending the group against Turkey.
