Basic Strategy: Core Decision Framework
Basic strategy is the mathematically optimal play for every possible player hand against every dealer upcard. It minimises the house edge. Deviating on a hunch increases the house edge above the certified figure.
Key principles:
- Always split Aces and 8s. Splitting Aces gives two chances at 21. Splitting 8s escapes a hard 16, the worst player hand.

Insurance Maths: Why It Is Always Wrong
Insurance is offered when the dealer's upcard is an Ace: up to half your original bet, paying 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack.
In a standard 6-deck shoe:

"Even money" is insurance on a blackjack hand when the dealer shows an Ace: a guaranteed 1:1 payout instead of the 3:2 natural. The maths is identical. You decline a higher EV outcome for a certain lower payout. Take insurance only if you are card-counting with a count that confirms disproportionately many tens remain.
6:5 Blackjack: Name and Shame
Standard blackjack pays 3:2 on a natural: $100 bet wins $150. The 6:5 variant pays $120. The shortfall is $30 per natural. Naturals occur approximately once in every 21 hands (4.75%).
