Italy have already suffered a couple of setbacks and can hardly afford another in the remaining three rounds. They are chasing a third consecutive victory over Japan when the two sides meet in Osaka.
Japan Looking to Extend Perfect Run
Japan have been one of the standout teams in the Nations League 2026, sitting alone at the top of the standings with a perfect 8-0 record and already securing a place in the final tournament.
Their Week 2 schedule was relatively favourable, but they still dropped several sets in victories over Serbia (3-1), Iran (3-2) and France (3-2).
Their biggest challenge came against the United States, where Japan produced an impressive comeback performance. They twice recovered from a set down before winning the deciding set to claim a 3-2 victory.
Italy Chasing a Strong Finish
Italy are hoping to improve on last year's Nations League silver medal, but their campaign has been inconsistent so far, leaving them sixth in the standings with a 5-3 record.
The Azzurri endured a disappointing start to Week 2, losing to Bulgaria (3-2) and Ukraine (3-0). They finished June with further defeats against stronger opponents, Brazil (3-1) and Slovenia (3-1).
Earlier this month, Italy played a friendly against Argentina and justified their status as favourites with a 3-1 victory.
