France have struggled throughout the season against top-tier opponents and are now one defeat away from dropping out of the playoff race. Standing in their way are reigning VNL champions Poland, who have been in outstanding form.
France Facing a Must-Win Match
France’s chances of reaching the Nations League 2026 final tournament have been reduced to a minimum, with Les Bleus currently sitting 11th in the standings on a 5-5 record.
After a disappointing Week 1, in which they won just one of four matches, the French bounced back impressively in Week 2 with three consecutive victories over Iran (3-2), Cuba (3-2) and Serbia (3-0).
France then came agonisingly close to becoming the first team to beat Japan in this year's Nations League, taking the opening two sets before eventually falling 3-2 after a dramatic fourth set that ended 35-33 in Japan's favour.
Earlier this week, Les Bleus were outclassed by Brazil in a 3-0 defeat despite losing the opening two sets by a narrow 25-23 scoreline. They responded well by sweeping China 3-0 in their latest outing.
Poland Extending Their Winning Run
Poland are the reigning Nations League champions and have continued their excellent form in 2026, entering the final stages in third place with an 8-2 record.
Both of their defeats came in five-set battles against Slovenia and Japan in mid-June, but the Poles responded brilliantly with consecutive victories over Ukraine (3-2), Belgium (3-2), Turkey (3-2), Germany (3-1) and Argentina (3-1).
The reigning champions have also impressed in Week 3, opening with a dominant 3-0 victory over Bulgaria before defeating another serious Top 7 contender, Brazil, in straight sets.
