Justin Gaethje’s long road to a UFC title finally culminated with a shock stoppage win over Ilia Topuria in a history card at the White House on Sunday night.
As part of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, the UFC hosted a card on the South Lawn that featured no less than two title fights – and both of those bouts produced upsets.
Ciryl Gane wrecked Alex Pereira’s bid to become the first three-weight champion, knocking out the former middleweight and light-heavyweight champion in the second round to become interim heavyweight champion.
And in the main-event, Gaethje finally claimed the lightweight championship in his third attempt, stopping Ilia Topuria in four rounds to claim the 155lb crown.
“I’m from America,” Gaethje told Joe Rogan after the fight. “Two hundred and fifty years ago, we were way bigger than six-to-one underdogs, and look at this country now.”
“I knew I was going to have to get through the first round. His skills are unmatched when he’s fresh and I’m fresh. But my durability, my tenacity and my heart were going to carry me through.
“I’ve shown you why I’m the most consistent, most exciting guy that’s ever been in this cage. I am made for these moments.”
