Sonmez Starts Strong In Guadalajara

Zeynep Sonmez defeated Irina Shymanovich in dominant straight sets to reach the second round in Guadalajara, winning 6-1, 6-1. She did not lose her serve and converted all five break points to seal the match.

This is her best result in Guadalajara. Last year, she made her debut but lost to Tatjana Maria in the opener. She is now looking for her first back-to-back wins since Eastbourne a few months ago.

She has played 20 events this year and registered multiple wins only five times. She reached the quarterfinals in 's-Hertogenbosch, Eastbourne and Merida, as well as the third round at the Australian Open and Madrid.

Jovic Returns As Defending Champion

Iva Jovic had a successful outing at the US Open last week, reaching the fourth round before losing to Coco Gauff in straight sets. This was her third second-week appearance at a Grand Slam this year.

The American has enjoyed an impressive rise on tour this year, recording five quarterfinal-or-better results on tour along with several third-round-or-better runs at high-profile events, keeping her comfortably inside the top 20.

She is now making her second appearance in Guadalajara. Last year, she lifted her maiden tour-level title here after defeating Emiliana Arango in the final. Before that, she had not reached the quarterfinals on tour in her career. She now looks to defend the title this week.
