The event moved to New York in 1915 and later entered the Open Era in 1968, when professionals were allowed to compete. In 1978, the tournament moved to Flushing Meadows and switched to hard courts, where it has remained ever since.

Players to Watch

Aryna Sabalenka
Sabalenka returns as the defending champion and world No. 1, but her recent form has been below her usual standards. With several strong challengers in the field, she faces a major test if she is to successfully defend her title.

Iga Swiatek
Swiatek has finally rediscovered her best form after several difficult months and arrives as one of the biggest threats to the defending champion. If she maintains that level, she has every chance of challenging for the title.

Elena Rybakina
Rybakina is always a dangerous player on hard courts and comes into the tournament in good form. Her powerful game makes her one of the strongest contenders in the field.

Jessica Pegula
Pegula has been in excellent form and will also have the backing of the home crowd in New York. Fatigue could be a concern after a busy schedule, but she remains a serious threat if she can stay fresh.

Coco Gauff
The former champion and local favourite arrives in strong form after winning the Cincinnati title. With momentum and home support behind her, Gauff will be one of the players to watch closely.

Jessica Pegula is the dark horse, with her current form and home support giving her the potential to make a deep run.
