Vacherot Out of Top 20

Valentin Vacherot dropped out of the Top 20 before the US Open. It proved to be justified as he lost in straight sets to Frances Tiafoe in the third round.

The 27-year-old won both matches in the Davis Cup, defeating Otto Virtanen in 3 sets before a 6-3 7-6 victory over Eero Vasa. He didn’t last long in Chengdu, beaten 6-4 7-6 by Lloyd Harris in his opening match.

The tie breaks have continued in Tokyo, Vacherot getting past Alexander Blockx 7-6 7-6 and Stefanos Tsitsipas 4-6 7-6 6-4. He has saved a combined 13/17 break points in Japan.

Fils on Fire in Tokyo

Arthur Fils started the year ranked 42 but is now a Top 10 player. He lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the Qatar Open final before winning the title in Barcelona.

The 22-year-old suffered a semi-final defeat to Jannik Sinner in Madrid before a hip injury forced him to miss the French Open. He hit top form in Cincinnati, beating Jiri Lehecka, Alex de Minaur, Flavio Cobolli and Frances Tiafoe on his way to the title.

The Frenchman suffered a disappointing defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round at the US Open but has bounced back in Tokyo where he was champion in 2024.

Fils did it the hard way in the qualifiers, getting past Martin Damm and Kamil Majchrzak in 3 sets. He has hardly been pushed in the main draw, a 6-3 6-2 win over Luca Van Assche followed by a 6-3 7-5 victory against Tiafoe.
