Novak Djokovic rarely wins in straight sets and is coming off an early exit in Cincinnati. I think Mariano Navone can win a set here, but Djokovic’s class should shine through at the US Open.
HTH
This will be the first match between Mariano Navone and Novak Djokovic.
Mariano Navone Form
Navone has had some success on clay this year, winning the title in Bucharest and reaching the final in Geneva.
The Argentine beat Matteo Berrettini and Valentin Vacherot in Montreal before a 6-3 6-2 third round defeat to Arthur Fils. He got past Raphael Collignon in Cincinnati but was no match for Alexander Blockx in the second round, going down 6-3 6-4.
Navone didn’t last long in Winston Salem, beaten 6-3 7-6 by James Duckworth in his opening match.
Novak Djokovic Form
Djokovic continues his quest for a 25th Grand Slam. He went close at the Australian Open, beating Jannik Sinner to reach the final where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz.
The 39-year-old had a two set lead against Joao Fonseca in the third round at the French Open but couldn’t close it out. He went deep at Wimbledon, getting to the semi-finals where he ran out of steam against Jannik Sinner, beaten in straight sets.
The Serbian has played one match since, in Cincinnati where he suffered a 2-6 6-4 6-4 loss against Thiago Agustin Tirante in his opening match.
