Carlos Alcaraz came through his opening match in New York and is a short priced favourite once again.

Jaime Faria reached the fourth round in Cincinnati and is capable of winning a set, but sticking with the two-time champion is a big ask.

Faria Climbing the Rankings

Jaime Faria started the year ranked 151, beating Denis Shapovalov and Jan Lennard Struff at Roland Garros to break into the Top 100.

The 23-year-old took a big step forward as a qualifier in Cincinnati, taking out Ben Shelton on his way to the fourth round where he lost to Lorenzo Musetti.

It was looking like Faria would cruise to victory against Jenson Brooksby in New York before being pushed to 5 sets. He came through 6-3 7-6 4-6 1-6 6-2, saving 9/16 break points.

Alcaraz Back in Action

Carlos Alcaraz had a sensational start to the year, winning the Australian Open and Qatar Open. He went close to defending his title in Monte Carlo, beaten by Jannik Sinner in the final.

The Spaniard suffered a wrist injury in Barcelona, missing the French Open and Wimbledon as a result. He was out for four months before returning to action at the US Open.

The 23-year-old was too good for Roman Safiullin, coming through 6-4 6-4 6-4 in over two hours. He saved 5/6 break points, hitting 28 winners and 27 unforced errors.
Alcaraz discussed his mentality after the victory: “I had some doubts about the match, I’m not going to lie. I’ve been thinking about, ‘I’m going to last a match of best of five. I’m going to last playing four sets, five sets, I don’t know.'”

“So I had a little bit of doubt, but I tried to forget everything and be focused on the things I had to do, the things that I tried to improve. I’m just happy that I won in straight sets, another win, and physically I just played really well.”
