Although Svitolina enters the US Open with some injury concerns, Sierra's limited success outside clay makes the Ukrainian the strong favorite to progress.

Elina Svitolina Brings an Impressive Season to New York

Elina Svitolina defeated Tereza Valentova in her opening match in Cincinnati but was forced to withdraw from her third-round match after sustaining an ankle injury. She will now be looking to regain her momentum and return to her best form this week.

The Ukrainian has enjoyed an impressive season so far, playing 16 events and reaching at least the quarterfinals in 11 of them. Her highlights include winning the title in Rome, finishing runner-up in Dubai, reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open, Indian Wells and Toronto, and making the quarterfinals at the French Open.

She has played the US Open 12 times before and cleared the opening-round hurdle in nine of those appearances, including a semifinal run in 2019.

Sierra Looks to End Her Losing Streak

Solana Sierra has endured a difficult period in recent weeks and is currently on a four-match losing streak. She has not won a match since Wimbledon.

The Argentine produced some encouraging results during the clay-court season, reaching the fourth round in Madrid and the third round at the French Open and in Rome. Apart from those results, however, she has struggled to register multiple wins at tour level this year.

This is her third appearance at the US Open. She lost in the first round in both of her previous appearances, most recently against Sorana Cirstea last year.
