Sara Bejlek's Breakthrough Reaches New Heights
Sara Bejlek knocked out World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets to secure her place in the quarterfinals, 7-6, 6-4. She was twice a break down in the first set and also trailed 1-4 in the second before making another comeback to seal the win.
This is the first Top 10 victory of her career. Before this, she had been on a three-match losing streak against Top 10 opponents. It is also her best result at WTA 1000 level, having previously registered multiple wins at this level only once, when she reached the fourth round in Madrid in 2024.
The Czech youngster enjoyed a breakthrough week in Abu Dhabi earlier this year, winning her maiden tour-level title and making her Top 50 debut. However, fitness issues halted her progress, and she won only four matches across her following 11 events.
She has regained momentum in recent months by reaching the quarterfinals in Prague and Athens. With this run in Cincinnati, she is now closing in on a Top 30 debut.

Madison Keys Gets a Timely Cincinnati Boost
Madison Keys defeated Xiyu Wang in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals in Cincinnati, 7-6, 6-4. She initially trailed 0-2 in the first set before fighting back to win in straight sets.
This is her fourth quarterfinal appearance in Cincinnati. She lost at this stage to Aryna Sabalenka in 2018 but converted her last two appearances into deep runs, winning the title in 2019 and reaching the semifinal in 2023.
The 31-year-old started the North American swing with back-to-back early exits, but this run will provide a much-needed confidence boost ahead of the US Open. It is also her first quarterfinal at WTA 1000 level this year.
The American lost significant points in Australia and skipped the Middle East swing due to injury issues. However, she gradually rebuilt her momentum by winning the title in Eastbourne and reaching the fourth round at the French Open and Wimbledon.
