Mayar Sherif Looks To Regain Her Clay-Court Momentum

Mayar Sherif has played only two events since suffering her injury in Hamburg in July, with both ending in straight-set defeats, most recently against Nikola Bartunkova at the US Open.

The 30-year-old struggled to produce consistent results earlier this year but found momentum a few months ago by winning 18 consecutive matches on clay, including her tour-level title in Iasi and two other WTA 125 titles, before the injury halted her progress.

This is her second appearance here in Beijing. She made her debut in 2023 but lost to Daria Kasatkina in three sets and will be looking for a better start this week.

Polina Kudermetova Seeks To Build On Asian Swing

Polina Kudermetova already started her Asian swing last week in Seoul, where she suffered a tough three-set opening-round loss against Kamilla Rakhimova. Despite the defeat, her performance was encouraging.

The 23-year-old Uzbek has posted five quarterfinal-or-better results this year, all coming at lower-level events. On tour, she has played 11 events and won only three main-draw matches, highlighting her struggles at this level.

She has played here twice, losing in the qualifying stage on her debut in 2024 before reaching the second round last year. She will now look to continue that progress this week.
