Sherif Carries Red-Hot Form Into Semifinals

Mayar Sherif moved into the semifinals after defeating Yulia Putintseva in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6. Both players exchanged six breaks of serve, but the Egyptian raised her level in the crucial moments to secure the victory.

With this run, Sherif has extended her winning streak on clay to 13 matches after lifting back-to-back WTA 125 titles in Brescia and Contrexéville.

The run highlights her resurgence after an inconsistent spell over the previous three months. Earlier this season, she also reached the semifinals of the WTA 125 events in Antalya and Dubrovnik.

Sherif owns a 3-1 record in WTA tour-level semifinals. She has reached five tour-level semifinals in her career and most recently won at this stage in Rabat in 2024.

Oliynykova Eyes First WTA Tour Final

Oleksandra Oliynykova secured her place in the semifinals after defeating Clara Burel in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. She trailed by a break twice in the second set before producing another impressive comeback to close out the match in straight sets.

The Ukrainian arrived in Athens on a three-match losing streak but has quickly rediscovered her best clay-court form. This run will lift her to a new career-high ranking of around No. 45 next week.

Earlier this season, Oliynykova produced breakthrough results by reaching the semifinals in Cluj-Napoca and the third round at both the Italian Open and the French Open. Before 2026, she had never won a main-draw match at WTA tour level.

After losing to Emma Raducanu in her only previous tour-level semifinal earlier this season, Oliynykova now has another opportunity to reach the first WTA final of her career.
