Matteo Berrettini is finally starting to overcome his physical issues after dropping out of the Top 100. He has shown no signs of limitations in the grueling heat at the French Open.
The Italian came back to beat Marton Fucsovics in 4 sets before an efficient 6-4 6-4 6-4 victory over Arthur Rinderknech. He spent more than five hours on court in a 7-6 5-7 6-7 6-4 7-6 win against Francisco Comesana, saving two match points.
The 30-year-old was too good for Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the fourth round, coming through to win 6-3 7-6 7-6. His serve was efficient, winning 84% of his 1st serves and saving 1/2 break points.
Berrettini spoke after the victory: “This is the love of my life, because if it wasn’t I wouldn’t be here. After all the setbacks, all the injuries, all the bad moments, I came back once again.
“There were moments where it was really tough to go back and hit the ball, because I wasn’t ready and sure of my confidence.”
Arnaldi Getting Used to Long Matches
Matteo Arnaldi had an atrocious start to the season, losing eight of his opening ten matches and dropping to World No.107. He won the Cagliari Challenger to regain confidence.
The Italian defeated Jaume Munar and Alex de Minaur in Rome and went close against Rafael Jodar in the third round, saving 3/10 break points in a 3 sets defeat.
Arnaldi is showing why he got to the Top 30 at Roland Garros, getting past Tallon Griekspoor and Stefanos Tsitsipas in 4 sets.
The 25-year-old went over five hours in the third round, a 6-4 6-7 5-7 6-4 7-6 victory over Raphael Collignon. He was down against Frances Tiafoe but turned it around once again, getting through 7-6 6-7 3-6 7-6 6-4 in five and a half hours.
It could be a major turning point for Arnaldi, who said: “I always dreamed of playing a match at Roland Garros at night. This battle against Frances, at one point it wasn't tennis, it was something else.
“You were just playing with everything you had. There had to be a winner tonight, and fortunately it was me. This is definitely the best match I ever played.”
