Maria Sakkari advanced to the second round in Wuhan after defeating Donna Vekic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. The Greek recovered from a break down in both sets to complete the victory.
Sakkari has competed in 19 events this year but recorded multiple main-draw wins in only five tournaments. Her best results include a semifinal in Doha, a final in Athens, third-round appearances at the French Open and Wimbledon, and a quarterfinal run in Singapore.
Despite her inconsistent season, these performances and several opening-round wins at WTA 1000 events have helped her remain comfortably inside the top 50.
She has advanced beyond the opening round in Wuhan only once in two appearances, reaching the semifinals in 2017, and will aim to make another strong run this week.
