Although Swiatek is still searching for her best form, her overall level gives her a significant advantage over Frech.

Swiatek Looks to Rebuild Momentum After Recent Dip

  • Frech has a 2-0 record in second-round matches in Wuhan.
  • She is 0-4 against top-10 players in 2026.
  • Swiatek reached the quarterfinals on her only previous Wuhan appearance in 2025.
  • She has an 18-2 record against players ranked outside the top 50 in 2026.

Frech Makes the Most of Lucky-Loser Opportunity

Magdalena Frech lost in the final qualifying round to Aoi Ito in straight sets but received another opportunity to enter the main draw as a lucky loser. She made the most of that chance, defeating Mananchaya Sawangkaew in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6, to reach the second round.

The 28-year-old has struggled to string together victories for much of the season. She has played 21 events this year and recorded multiple main-draw wins in only three of them. Two of those occasions came during the recent North American swing, when she reached the third round in Cincinnati and the quarterfinals in Guadalajara. She also reached the final in Merida earlier this year.

These inconsistent results have pushed Frech outside the top 50 in the rankings. She will now aim to defend the ranking points she earned in Wuhan last year, when she reached the third round.

Swiatek Seeks Stronger Form After Beijing Setback

Iga Swiatek began her Asian swing in Beijing last week, reaching the quarterfinals after surviving a tough match against Donna Vekic in the early rounds. However, she lost to Elise Mertens in straight sets in the quarterfinals.

The Pole has played below her best level for much of the season, losing significant ranking points and recently moving closer to dropping out of the top 10.

She showed signs of a resurgence during the recently concluded North American swing, winning the title in Toronto and reaching the semifinals in Cincinnati. However, she has struggled to maintain that level in recent tournaments.
