Luca van Assche has a 34-62 record against Top 100 players and Bu Yunchaokete will have plenty of support in Shanghai. I am backing the home crowd favourite in the first round.

Luca van Assche is meeting Bu Yunchaokete for the first time.
Van Assche Strugglingo on Hard Courts
Luca Van Assche won the Estoril Open in July to break into the Top 50 for the first time.
The Frenchman hasn’t translated that form to hard courts on the ATP Tour, unable to get past the second round in five tournaments.
Van Assche went out in the first round in Tokyo last week, beaten 6-3 6-2 by Arthur Fils after winning 36% of his 2nd serves and saving 7/10 break points.
Yunchaokete Back in the Top 100
Bu Yunchaokete had been out of the Top 100 for a year and largely competing on the Challenger circuit.
The 24-year-old beat Rafael Jodar in straight sets at the US Open before a second round defeat to Michael Zheng. His first 2026 ATP Tour quarter-final came in Hangzhou last week where he lost to Roman Safiullin.
Yunchaokete beat Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-2 5-7 6-4 in the first round in Beijing. He kept it close against Novak Djokovic but faded in a 4-6 7-6 6-2 defeat, just enough to climb to 93 in the rankings.
