Samsonova Finds Her Best Level In A Hard-Fought Run
Liudmila Samsonova defeated world No. 10 Marta Kostyuk from a set down to reach the semifinals this week, winning 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. She trailed by a break in the decider but quickly bounced back and won the crucial points to close out the match.
All three of her matches this week have been tight, as she played a tiebreak against Elsa Jacquemot in the first round and a tough three-setter against Kayla Day in the following match. This is her first semifinal since Berlin last year.
The Russian struggled significantly earlier this year and registered multiple wins only twice in the first six months, which pushed her close to dropping outside the top 70 in the rankings.
However, results such as reaching the quarterfinals in Washington, the fourth round in Toronto and the third round at Wimbledon have helped bring her back into the top 50 in the rankings. She now heads into this clash with a 9-9 career record in tour-level semifinals.

Stearns Continues Her Impressive Run
Peyton Stearns secured her spot in the semifinals after defeating Sloane Stephens in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4. She saved three set points in the first set and again came back from 0-3 down in the second to close out the match in straight sets.
Her performances this week have been encouraging, as she defeated former finalist Emiliana Arango and recent Monterrey champion Diane Parry in straight sets earlier this week, particularly considering her struggles with consistency and results in recent months.
The 24-year-old had registered multiple main-draw wins only four times this year before arriving this week, winning the title in Austin, reaching the quarterfinals in Memphis and the third round at the Australian Open and French Open.
The American has played four tour-level semifinals in her career and won three of them. Her only loss came against Jasmine Paolini in Rome in 2025.
