The Italian dropped out of the Top 100 but has shown no signs of deserving it at the French Open. He came back to beat Marton Fucsovics 6-7 7-5 6-1 6-2 in his opening match.
The 30-year-old was efficient in the second round, a 6-4 6-4 6-4 victory over Arthur Rinderknech. He spent over five hours on court in a 7-6 5-7 6-7 6-4 7-6 win against Francisco Comesana, saving two match points.
