Carlos Alcaraz took out the title in Tokyo, winning the 2nd set 6-1 in three of his five victories. I am expecting a similar performance against Juan Manuel Cerundolo who will surely be outclassed in Shanghai.

Cerundolo Struggling on Hard Courts

Juan Manuel Cerundolo won the Bordeaux Challeger in May and carried that form to the French Open. He shocked Jannik Sinner on his way to the fourth round where he lost to Matteo Berrettini.

The Argentine became a Top 50 player for the first time but it was short lived. He has gone 7-6 on the hard court swing, his best result coming in a quarter-final appearance in Winston Salem.

The 24-year-old came to Shanghai after losing four of his previous five matches. He beat Nicolas Mejia 6-4 6-4 in the first round, saving 3/5 break points against the qualifier.

Alcaraz Back in Form

Carlos Alcaraz returned to action at the US Open after spending four months out with a wrist injury. He got to the quarter-finals where he suffered a 5 sets defeat to Ben Shelton.

The 23-year-old played one match at the Laver Cup, beating Taylor Fritz.

The Spaniard won the Japan Open last week despite starting slow in all five matches. He went over 10.5 games in all five first sets, four of them settled in tie breaks.

Alcaraz needed 3 sets to beat Alex Michelsen and Jaume Munar before falling behind in the final. He turned on the style to defeat Jiri Lehecka 7-6 6-4 and maintain his perfect record in Tokyo.
