Jasmine Paolini defeated rising Czech youngster Nikola Bartůňková in straight sets to reach the third round in Wuhan, winning 7-6, 6-3. She trailed 2-5 in the opening set before producing an impressive comeback to secure the victory.
This is Paolini's third appearance in the round of 16 in Wuhan. She previously reached this stage twice, converting both opportunities into quarterfinal appearances, including a semifinal run in 2025 and a quarterfinal finish in 2024.
The Italian has struggled significantly this season. She did not record more than two match wins in any tournament during the first six months of the year. She also finished her clay-court season with the worst win-loss record of her career on the surface, at 3-4, and has dealt with foot problems in recent months.
However, her recent performances have offered some encouragement. She reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and the third round at the US Open, although those results were not enough to prevent her from dropping outside the top 30 in the rankings.
