Sinner Chasing Records
Jannik Sinner has won 28 consecutive matches, 25 coming in straight sets. He won four straight Masters titles in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo and Madrid, deservedly returning to World No.1 along the way.
The Italian had no problems in his opening four matches in Rome, defeating Sebastian Ofner 6-3 6-4, Alexei Popyrin 6-2 6-0, Andrea Pellegrino 6-2 6-3 and Andrey Rublev 6-2 6-4. He saved 4/5 break points in that run, hardly giving his opponents a chance.
The 24-year-old had a rain delay against Daniil Medvedev, getting through 6-2 5-7 6-4 in almost three hours.
Sinner spoke about his physical condition after the victory: “It has been a situation I haven't been in yet, where you need to finish when you're nearly over with the match. You sleep, you don't know what's coming out the next day.
“I think it's normal that not every day we feel 100 per cent. I tried to play with the best possible energy I have. Yesterday brought me to a point where I was up today. Today I'm very happy that I finished it.”
Ruud Relishing the Conditions in Rome
Casper Ruud disappointed on hard courts, going 7-7, but has enjoyed returning to clay. He retired in Monte Carlo before reaching the quarter-finals in Madrid where he lost to Alexander Blockx.
Dropping from 15 to 25 in the rankings, the Norwegian has continued his love affair with Rome where he had lost in three semi-finals.
The 27-year-old cruised past Zachary Svajda 6-1 6-3, Jiri Lehecka 6-3 6-4 and Lorenzo Musetti 6-3 6-1, saving a combined 3/4 break points. He was set for a swift victory against Karen Khachanov before a rain delay, recovering to win 6-1 1-6 6-2.
Ruud was back to his best against Luciano Darderi, winning 6-1 6-1 in 66 minutes. He won 60% of his return points and converted 3/9 break points.
He commented about rest time after the victory: “I am a bit sorry for Luciano, playing at home and not with the most energy, but it is understandable, he finished at 2:30 am the other night.
“What a tournament he has had and luckily for me I was done much earlier that day and had a little more time to recover. It is my 10th semi-final at a 1000 and his first, so you try to use that experience to your advantage and I think I did well today.”
