Both players have struggled for consistency this year, but Janice Tjen has shown a slightly better level recently, giving her the edge heading into this clash.

Tjen Looks To End Her Run Of Early Exits

  • Tjen has registered multiple main-draw wins only once in 22 events this year.
  • She has a 7–11 record against players outside the Top 50 in 2026.
  • Starodubtseva has lost six of her last seven matches on tour.
  • She has a 4–6 record against Top 50 players this year.

Tjen's Comeback Spirit Faces Another Test

Janice Tjen defeated Dayana Yastremska from a set down to reach the second round in Monterrey, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6. She trailed by a set and a break at one stage and was also 0-3 down in the deciding set before producing another impressive comeback.

This is the 11th time she has cleared the opening-round hurdle on tour this year. Apart from her third-round run in Dubai, she has failed to win multiple matches in any other campaign this season. She will now be looking to end that streak this week.

She has a 2-4 record in R16 matches on tour this year. She converted her first two appearances at this stage into quarterfinal runs in Sao Paulo and Chennai but has lost her last four.

Starodubtseva Ends Losing Streak in Monterrey

Yulia Starodubtseva ended her six-match losing streak by defeating Lilli Tagger in straight sets in the first round in Monterrey, 6-3, 6-4. She trailed 1-3 in the second set before fighting back to finish the match in straight sets.

She had previously cleared the opening-round hurdle six times on tour this year and registered multiple wins only three times, reaching the third round in Miami and at the French Open and the final in Charleston.

The Ukrainian will now look to replicate her strong clay-court form and progress further this week. She heads into the clash with a 4-6 record against Top 50 players.
