Fitness has been the biggest obstacle for Stan Wawrinka in recent years, which is hardly surprising at 41 years of age. However, with this set to be his final season on tour and his last appearance at his home tournament in Gstaad, motivation will not be in short supply. As long as his body holds up, Wawrinka still has the quality to produce spells of excellent tennis, particularly in the early stages of matches.

Wawrinka Seeks To Turn Back Time

  • Faria holds a 4–1 record in opening-round tour-level matches in 2026.
  • He owns a 29–12 record against players outside the Top 100 this year.
  • Wawrinka has a 5–6 record in opening-round matches in 2026.
  • He has a 3–13 record against Top 100 players this year.

Faria Returns to Clay with Confidence

Jaime Faria has produced several notable results in recent months, reaching the third round at Roland Garros and the second round at Wimbledon. Those performances helped him return to the top 100 in the latest rankings.

The Portuguese has also enjoyed a consistent season on the Challenger Tour, reaching six quarterfinals or better, while also making the quarterfinals in Rio de Janeiro, highlighting his steady progress this year.

This is Faria's debut appearance in Gstaad, and he will be looking to carry his recent momentum into another clay-court event.

Stan Wawrinka is coming off a first-round loss to Matteo Berrettini at Wimbledon after playing five tiebreak sets. Despite the defeat, the Swiss delivered an encouraging performance.

Over the last five months, Wawrinka has managed just one ATP Tour main-draw win, which came on home soil at the Geneva clay-court event. He will now look to build on that result this week.

This is Wawrinka's 14th main-draw appearance in Gstaad. He has cleared the opening-round hurdle in seven of his previous 13 appearances, with his best result being a runner-up finish in 2005.
