Iga Swiatek survived a scare against Donna Vekic to move into the next round after a tight three-set battle, winning 4-6, 7-6, 6-2. She trailed by a set and 2-5 at one stage before turning the match around with a dramatic comeback.
This is her third consecutive fourth-round appearance here in Beijing. She converted her first appearance into the title in 2023 but lost at this stage to Emma Navarro last year in three sets.
The Pole struggled significantly early this year, with her level dropping considerably and preventing her from producing deep results. However, she posted some impressive results during the North American swing by reaching her first final of the year in Toronto, where she won the title, before reaching the semifinals in Cincinnati.
She ended that swing with a disappointing straight-sets loss to Qinwen Zheng in the fourth round at the US Open. She is now rebuilding her momentum and looking to improve her ranking. She is currently ranked No. 9 after losing significant points over the last 10 months.
She has played five R16 matches at WTA 1000-level events this year and converted all of them into quarterfinal appearances. She will look to extend that record this week in Beijing.
