Frances Tiafoe completed a stunning comeback from two sets down to defeat Alex Michelsen in a thrilling US Open quarter-final, but it was his actions after the match that stole the spotlight.

The 28-year-old immediately embraced his devastated fellow American at the net, offering words of encouragement as Michelsen broke down in tears following the heartbreaking defeat.

Tiafoe Shows His Class After Thrilling US Open Win

Tiafoe had barely finished celebrating his remarkable comeback when he noticed Michelsen in tears. He walked over and wrapped his fellow American in a long embrace, allowing the devastated 22-year-old to cry on his shoulder after coming so close to reaching his first Grand Slam semi-final.

Tiafoe later explained what he told Michelsen during the emotional moment: “Man, I know. I know how much that hurts… but you're gonna be here so many more times, man.”

Tiafoe praises Michelsen after dramatic comeback

Speaking after the match, Tiafoe was quick to acknowledge how close Michelsen came to pulling off the biggest win of his career. Rather than focusing on his own remarkable comeback, the American praised his younger compatriot for the level he showed throughout the contest.

“He’s a hell of a player, man. I mean, he easily could have won today. Shout out to Alex Michelsen.”

Tiafoe also admitted that he struggled to find his rhythm early in the match before gradually turning things around.

“In the end I slowly started to get my rhythm. Snuck out that third set and got better and better."
