Avanesyan Continues Her Comeback
Elena Avanesyan defeated Moyuka Uchijima in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to move into the second round in Iasi. She trailed by a break in both sets before making a comeback to win comfortably.
This was just her second tour-level main-draw win of the season after reaching the second round in Ostrava, highlighting her struggles at this level in recent months.
The 23-year-old was ranked inside the top 40 during the first half of 2025, but injury issues halted her progress. She failed to defend significant ranking points during the second half of the season, including her runner-up finish in Iasi, while also dropping points earlier this year, which pushed her outside the top 300.
However, her recent results at lower-level events have been encouraging. She won the W100 Zagreb title, reached the semifinals in WTA 125 Makarska, and the quarterfinals at the WTA 125 Madrid event, bringing her closer to a return to the top 200.

Marcinko Targets Quarterfinal Spot
Petra Marcinko registered a three-set victory over Nadia Podoroska, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, to reach the second round in Iasi. She saved 16 of the 19 break points she faced and converted four of the eight break points she created during the match.
This was her first win since her semifinal run in Eastbourne, where she retired with an abdominal injury while trailing Madison Keys by a set. It was also the best grass-court result of her career, having never won a main-draw match on the surface before.
Marcinko has not been the most consistent player this season, but her breakthrough results helped her achieve a career-high ranking of No. 45. She won her maiden WTA title in Rabat and also reached the semifinals in Eastbourne and the WTA 125 Oeiras event.
Those are the only three tournaments in which she has won multiple matches out of the 19 events she has played this season.
