Vekic faces a difficult test against an improving Swiatek, who will look to extend her unbeaten record in this matchup.

Vekic Looks To End Her WTA 1000 Drought
Donna Vekic defeated Lin Zhu in three sets to progress to the third round in Beijing, winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. She had a set and a 4-0 lead at one stage before being forced to play the decider, where she finished the match strongly.
This is a much-needed win for the Croatian, who arrived this week short of confidence after winning only one match in her last seven events. She will now look to register multiple wins for only the second time in eight appearances in Beijing, having reached the fourth round in 2018.
After a difficult start to the season pushed her outside the top 100 in the rankings, her semifinal run in Linz and title at the Queen’s Club helped her return to the top 50. Those are the only occasions in 18 appearances this year when she has won multiple main-draw matches on tour.
Since reaching the fourth round in Madrid last year, she has not registered multiple main-draw wins in a WTA 1000-level event. She will now look to end that streak this week.

Swiatek Builds On Her North American Resurgence
Iga Swiatek started her Beijing campaign with a straight-sets win over Xinyu Gao to move into the third round, winning 6-2, 6-3. She lost her serve once early in the match but quickly found her rhythm and closed it out comfortably.
She is now looking to reach the fourth round here in Beijing for the third time. She won the title in 2023 and reached the fourth round in 2025.
The 25-year-old has struggled to produce deep results, with her dip in form pushing her outside the top five in the rankings. She did not reach a final during the first seven months of the season.
However, she showed signs of a resurgence during the North American swing by winning the title in Toronto and reaching the semifinals in Cincinnati. She could not build on those results, though, suffering a disappointing straight-sets loss to Qinwen Zhang at the US Open.
