Cristina Bucsa Targets Another Step Forward
Cristina Bucsa defeated Anna Bondar in straight sets to reach the second round in Monterrey, 6-4, 6-3. She saved the only break point she faced and converted three of the eight break points she created.
This is just the fifth time she has cleared the opening-round hurdle on tour this year and only her second win in her last nine events. She has progressed beyond the second round only once, during her title-winning campaign in Merida.
This was a much-needed win for Bucsa, who will now look to build momentum ahead of the US Open, where she has fourth-round points to defend next week.

Darja Vidmanova Looks to Extend Her Momentum
Darja Vidmanova defeated Kimberly Birrell in straight sets to reach the second round in Monterrey, 7-6, 6-3. She trailed by a break three times in the first set before fighting back to win the match.
This is only the third time she has cleared the opening-round hurdle in nine tour-level events in her career. She has registered multiple wins at this level only once, which came recently in Memphis, where she finished as the runner-up.
She has also posted five semifinal-or-better results at lower levels, including four WTA 125 events. Her recent improvements at those levels, coupled with her breakthrough final in Memphis, have given her valuable confidence, and she will now look to progress further.
