The Kinoshita Group Japan Open returns to Tokyo as one of the longest-running ATP tournaments in Asia, having first been staged in 1972. The ATP 500 event is played on outdoor hard courts at the Ariake Coliseum in the Ariake Tennis Forest, with the tournament also briefly moving to the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza in 2018.

The 2026 edition features a strong eight-player seeded field, led by defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, with Frances Tiafoe, Taylor Fritz, Rafael Jodar, Brandon Nakashima, Casper Ruud, Tommy Paul and Valentin Vacherot also seeded. Alcaraz won the 2025 title after beating Fritz in the final, while recent champions include Arthur Fils, Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz, Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev.

Playing Conditions & Court Speed

The Japan Open is played on outdoor hard courts at Ariake Coliseum, providing a hard-court environment suited to aggressive baseline tennis and players who can take control of points early. The relatively quick conditions can also reward big servers and strong returners who are able to turn short points in their favour.

Tokyo’s early-October conditions can bring warm temperatures and humidity, while wind can occasionally influence play on the outdoor courts. Players who adapt quickly to the conditions and maintain a high level across matches can have an advantage as the tournament progresses.

Players to Watch

Carlos Alcaraz
The defending champion returns to Tokyo as the top seed, but fitness will be a key talking point after his lengthy injury layoff. He has only recently returned to competitive action, so his early matches will be closely watched.

Arthur Fils
The 2024 champion comes into Tokyo in excellent form and remains one of the most interesting names in the field. However, he starts in qualifying after missing the main-draw entry deadline.

Rafael Jódar
Jódar has enjoyed a sensational breakthrough season and has been remarkably consistent, rising into the top 20. The young Spaniard also arrives with strong momentum after an impressive Laver Cup performance.

Taylor Fritz
Fritz brings plenty of experience in Tokyo, having won the title in 2022 and finished runner-up to Alcaraz in 2025. His current form is a slight concern, but his record at this venue makes him one to watch.
