Ashlyn Krueger defeated Lanlana Tararudee from a set down to reach the third round in Wuhan, winning 2-6, 6-1, 6-1. After losing the opening set despite taking an early lead, the American raised her level and dominated the remaining two sets to complete the comeback.
Krueger lost in the final qualifying round to Yulia Putintseva in straight sets but made good use of her lucky-loser opportunity by winning her next two matches, including a first-round victory over Shuai Zhang.
Her progress this week is particularly encouraging, as she had not recorded multiple wins at an event since Wimbledon and had never won a match in Wuhan in her previous two appearances. She will now aim to reach her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal.
The 22-year-old had played 16 tour-level events before this week, recording multiple wins only three times. Those runs included a fourth-round appearance at Wimbledon, a semifinal finish in Austin and a third-round run at Indian Wells. She has also reached at least the semifinals in a couple of WTA 125 grass-court events.
