Antonia Ruzic Seeks a Fresh Start

Antonia Ruzic suffered an opening-round exit in Cincinnati last week, losing to Magdalena Frech in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. It was her fifth first-round loss in her last seven tournaments.

The 23-year-old Croatian produced breakthrough results earlier this year by reaching her maiden tour-level semifinal in Hobart, the quarterfinals in Dubai and the third round in Indian Wells.

However, she has struggled to maintain that level in recent months and has failed to win multiple main-draw matches since then. This is her second appearance in Monterrey, and she reached the quarterfinals here last year.

Bartunkova Looks to Continue Her Steady Rise

Nikola Bartunkova has gained valuable experience in North America this year, reaching the third round in Toronto and the second round in Cincinnati. Both of her losses came against higher-ranked opponents, Amanda Anisimova and Sorana Cirstea respectively.

She also reached the fourth round in Rome and the third round at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, along with quarterfinal runs in Ostrava and Berlin. These results helped her achieve a career-high ranking of No. 39 recently.

Overall, she has made 11 main-draw appearances on tour this year and cleared the opening-round hurdle in nine of them, highlighting her strong record in the early stages.
