Ann Li pulled off an upset against Belinda Bencic to reach the fourth round in Beijing, winning 6-4, 6-3. She fired 12 aces and saved two of the three break points she faced during the match.
The American struggled for results and consistency early this year, registering multiple main-draw wins only once in the first three months. However, she posted some encouraging results in the following months.
She notably reached the semifinals in Monterrey and Strasbourg and also recorded several third-round appearances at high-profile events, which helped keep her around the top 30 in the rankings.
She has yet to reach a quarterfinal at WTA 1000 level in her career. She has had two opportunities to achieve that feat, both coming earlier this year, but lost in the R16 in Doha and Madrid.
