Parks Makes Positive Start In Singapore

Alycia Parks opened her campaign with a straight-sets win over lucky loser Mei Yamaguchi, winning 6-4, 6-3. She served eight aces and saved five of the seven break points she faced during the match.

This is the start she wanted after struggling to produce her best tennis earlier this year. Last year, she played six events during the Asian swing, with five ending without a win, and she now seeks better results this year.

The 25-year-old has played 28 events this year and registered multiple wins only four times, reaching the quarterfinals in Ostrava, Athens and Monterrey, as well as the third round in Miami.

Fernandez Builds On Recent North American Progress

Leylah Fernandez moved into the second round after defeating Kyoka Okamura in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Despite the scoreline, she had to work hard for the win, saving 11 of the 13 break points she faced during the match.

Until the start of the North American swing, the Canadian had struggled to produce results outside clay this year, but her fourth-round run in Toronto and third-round appearance at the US Open have given her confidence recently.

She has reached three quarterfinals on tour this year, all on clay. She is now looking for her first quarterfinal on hard court since Hong Kong last year.
