Ann Li's greater experience and improved recent form give her the edge, but Korneeva has enough talent to make this a competitive contest.

A Battle Between Potential And Experience

  • Korneeva holds a 1–3 record in second-round tour-level matches.
  • She owns a 1–2 career record against Top 50 players.
  • Ann Li has a 12–8 record against players outside the Top 50.
  • She is looking to reach her first hard-court quarterfinal of 2026.

Korneeva Aims to Build on Strong Start

Alina Korneeva defeated Aoi Ito in straight sets to reach the second round in Iași, winning 6-2, 6-1. She was broken twice but dominated the match overall, breaking her opponent's serve seven times.

This is the fifth time she has cleared the opening-round hurdle at tour level. In her previous four appearances, she managed multiple main-draw wins only once, when she reached the semifinals in Mérida in 2024.

The 19-year-old reached four semifinals or better on the ITF Circuit earlier this season. However, her level dipped after the start of the clay swing, and she will now look to regain her momentum with another deep run this week.

Ann Li Back on Track After Dominant Win

Ann Li defeated Maria Timofeeva in dominant fashion, winning 6-2, 6-1 to reach the second round. She saved all three break points she faced and converted five of the 12 break opportunities she created.

The victory comes as a welcome boost after suffering back-to-back opening-round exits in Bad Homburg and Wimbledon over the past few weeks.

The American registered multiple main-draw wins only once during the first three months of the season, but has shown improved form since the start of the clay swing. Her best results include a semifinal in Strasbourg, quarterfinals in Rouen and Nottingham, and a fourth-round appearance in Madrid.

She has a significant number of ranking points to defend over the coming weeks, making a deep run this week important for both her confidence and ranking.
