Match Preview

Iceland’s backcourt was nothing short of spectacular on Sunday against Sweden, fueling a dominant 35-27 victory. On the other side, nearly all of Switzerland's games with the exception of the Croatia clash, have been fast-paced, high-scoring affairs. With the Swiss already eliminated, they have no reason to slow down now. Expect plenty of transition play and quick strikes. My pick for this matchup is Over 58.5 goals.

Swiss Offense Hits a Wall After Strong Start

Switzerland has struggled to keep pace with the European heavyweights in the second phase. Now officially eliminated from semifinal contention, the Swiss are playing for pride and a potential shot at a 5th-place playoff position.

They showed their potential in the Main Round opener against Hungary, building a commanding six-goal lead by halftime. However, defensive lapses proved costly as they surrendered that advantage and had to settle for a 29-29 draw.

The knockout blow came on Sunday during their toughest offensive performance of the tournament. Facing Croatia, the Swiss attack was completely neutralized, managing only 24 goals in a 28-24 defeat that ended their dreams of a deeper run.

Iceland Gains Momentum After Stunning Co-Hosts

Iceland enters this contest with sky-high confidence. They currently sit in a strong position in Group II with four points and just two rounds remaining. Depending on other results across the bracket, a victory here could potentially punch their ticket to the semifinals.

Their Main Round journey started with a narrow 30-29 loss to Croatia, a game where a shaky first half proved to be their undoing. Despite a much-improved defensive effort in the second period, they couldn’t quite close the gap.

However, they responded with the biggest upset of the tournament on Sunday, dismantling co-hosts and heavy favorites Sweden 35-27. The Icelandic defense was a brick wall in the first half, holding the Swedes to just 12 goals. Offensively, Viggo Kristjansson was unstoppable at right back, carving through the defense to net 11 goals.
