Vikingur Reykjavik vs Gyor Predictions

Vikingur Reykjavik have a strong home record, and with the visitors short of match practice, I expect the Icelandic side to claim a vital first-leg victory on Tuesday.

I have my money on Vikingur Reykjavik to win.

Vikingur Backed in Reykjavik

  • Vikingur won 15 of their last 16 matches
  • Gyor face their first competitive fixture of the season

Gyor Hold Historical Edge

Vikingur Reykjavik and Gyor have met twice before in European competition. Gyor claimed victory in both legs of a European Cup clash in the 1980s.

Vikingur Strong at Home

Vikingur Reykjavik return to Champions League qualifying after a dramatic 3-2 league win against KA Akureyri last week. Trailing until the latter stages, late goals from Aron Elis Prandarson and Gylfi Sigurdsson secured a fine comeback victory for the Icelandic champions.

An attack-minded performance saw Vikingur register 22 shots as they claimed a deserved win at Víkingsvollur.

Solvi Ottesen’s side have been excellent on home soil this year, remaining unbeaten in 15 matches played in Reykjavik since the start of 2026. Vikingur picked up 12 wins in those 15 matches.

Fourteen games into the Besta deild campaign, the Vikes already boast an 11-point advantage at the summit of the division.

Similarly strong in home European fixtures, the Icelandic side bagged victories in seven of eight home continental fixtures since 2024.

Gyor Seeking First-Leg Upset

Gyor make the trip to Iceland for their first competitive fixture of the season. The Hungarian champions returned to action with a 2-2 friendly draw against Gak before a 2-1 win against Vojvodina two weeks ago.

Gyori ETO have enjoyed a remarkable rise since returning to the Hungarian top flight two years ago.

After finishing fourth in 2024-25, Balazs Borbely’s side held their nerve to claim their first top-flight title since 2013.

Now facing their first competitive fixture of the season, a lack of rhythm could be an issue against a Vikingur side already deep into their domestic campaign.

A poor road record in Europe is also a cause for concern. Gyor lost five of their last six continental away fixtures.

Vikingur Reykjavik vs Gyor Team News

Vikingur Reykjavik: (4-4-2) Ogmundur Kristinsson; David Orn Atlason, Oliver Ekroth, Gunnar Vatnhamar, Helgi Gudjonsson; Oskar Borgthorsson, Valdimar Thor Ingimundarson, Tarik Ibrahimagic, Gylfi Sigurdsson; Elias Mar Omarsson, Aron Elis Thrandarson

Vikingur have one injury concern ahead of Tuesday’s first leg.

Aron Snaer Fridriksson was forced off injured in the final 20 minutes against KA Akureyri and is likely to miss out. Recent signing Ogmundur Kristinsson stands by to make his first start.

Veteran playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson has scored in each of his last two starts and should feature in an advanced role for the hosts.

Gyori ETO: (4-2-3-1) Samuel Petras; Daniel Stefulj, Mark Csinger, Miljan Krpic, Stefan Vladoiu; Milan Vitalis, Rajmund Toth; Claudiu Bumba, Zeljko Gavric, Kevin Banati; Nfansu Njie

Gyori ETO have added several new faces ahead of their Champions League return.

Hungarian winger Szabolcs Schon has arrived from Bolton Wanderers, while defenders Mark Csinger and Adam Umathum have also joined the club.

Gyor are expected to be without Nadhir Benbouali due to his involvement with Algeria at the World Cup.

The Hungarians have no reported injury issues.
