Sporting CP vs Gil Vicente Preview

Sporting CP have scored nine goals in two matches but keeping clean sheets continues to be a problem.

Gil Vicente have nothing to lose here and can score, but stopping Luis Suarez is likely to be an impossible task.

HTH - Sporting Dominant in Lisbon

Sporting have won 17 of their last 21 matches against Gil Vicente, leading the head to head 35-8 alongside 10 draws. The Lions have won nine straight in Lisbon.

Sporting Reclaim Second Spot

Sporting were unable to win in their last five games in April as a heavy schedule and injuries caught up with them. They managed to draw 0-0 at Porto to reach the Portuguese Cup final.

The Lions couldn’t beat the bottom two clubs in Liga Portugal. They drew 1-1 draw at AVS before conceding twice in added time to draw 2-2 against Tondela.

Rui Borges’ side bounced back to score nine goals in two matches and reclaim second spot on the table. Luis Suárez registered a goal and two assists in a 5-1 victory against Guimaraes and scored again in a 4-1 win at Rio Ave.

Missed Opportunities for Gil Vicente

Gil Vicente have two wins in their last 11 matches and look like missing out on Europe next season.

Cesar Peixoto’s side drew 0-0 at Rio Ave in their last away game. They managed two shots on target and ended with 0.71-1.40 xG.

The Barcelos club are coming off a disappointing 3-1 defeat against Arouca. Once again they were wasteful in front of goal, registering 0.81 xG and missing the chance to join Famalicao on 53 points.

Peixoto spoke about the race for the Conference League spot: “Mathematically it's still possible, but we have to look at ourselves. We have to look at this game and see what we didn't do well.

“During the week we have to work on the team mentally and tactically. There's a lot we have to look at from this game and rebuild this team to be competitive again.”

Sporting CP (4-2-3-1) Rui Silva; Salvador Blopa, Eduardo Quaresma, Gonçalo Inácio, Maxi Araújo; Daniel Bragança, Hidemasa Morita; Geny Catamo, Trincão, Pedro Gonçalves; Luis Suárez

Salvador Blopa could start here with Borges’ right back options limited. Geovany Quenda and Geny Catamo compete for a spot on the right wing.

Gil Vicente (4-2-3-1) Daniel Figueira; Ze Carlos I, Marvin Elimbi, Jonathan Buatu, Ghislain Konan; Facundo Cáseres, Luis Esteves; Murilo de Souza, Santi Garcia, Joelson Fernandes; Gustavo Varela

Facundo Cáseres and Joelson Fernandes came off the bench at half-time against Arouca and could come into the starting side here.
