Cesena had a strong preseason under Alessandro Diamanti but Sassuolo are a big step up in class. With home advantage on their side, I am backing the Serie A side to advance in the Coppa Italia.
HTH
Sassuolo have a dominant 6-1 advantage against Cesena alongside one draw.
New Managers Take Over
Sassuolo start the new campaign with Alberto Aquilani in charge after Fabio Grosso left to join Fiorentina.
Aquilani’s new side started the preseason with a 4-1 victory over Padova but haven’t won since. I Neroverdi are coming off two defeats, 4-1 to Celta Vigo and 3-2 against Augsburg.
Cesena were never in the hunt for promotion last season, winning one of their final 15 matches. Ashley Cole’s brief time in charge came to an end with Alessandro Diamanti making his first foray into managing a senior side.
Diamanti couldn’t have asked for a better start, guiding the Emilia-Romagna club to four straight wins. They scored 12 goals and didn’t concede in that run.
Cesena’s impressive defensive display continued with a 0-0 draw against Forli.
Team News
Sassuolo defenders Fali Candé and Edoardo Pieragnolo are dealing with cruciate ligament injuries and star midfielder Ismaël Koné is out until January due to a tibia and fibula fracture.
Cesena goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann is out alongside striker Maurizio Rossetti.
