Mexico vs England Preview

Mexico have an excellent record at the Azteca and have been solid at the 2026 World Cup. England haven’t been at their best recently and a draw is the best bet in the round of 16.

Mexico Unbeaten in 12

  • Mexico are unbeaten in 12 consecutive matches.
  • England are unbeaten in their last 6 games.
  • England’s Harry Kane has scored 12 goals in his last 8 matches for club and country.

H2H

England have a 6-2 advantage against Mexico, alongside one draw.

Mexico Are Tough to Beat

Javier Aguirre’s Mexico are in strong long-term form and haven't lost in 12 consecutive games, winning 10. El Tri are also undefeated in their previous 26 matches at the Azteca.

Mexico cruised through the group stages with three successive victories. A 2-0 win over South Africa was followed by victories against South Korea 1-0 and Czechia 3-0.

The World Cup co-hosts extended their winning streak in all competitions to seven with a 2-0 victory over Ecuador. Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez scored in the first half and Mexico had 15 shots.

England Rely on Kane at the World Cup

England are in in decent form and have lost just once in their last 14 fixtures, winning 11. Harry Kane is the Three Lions' top scorer during that period with 11 international goals.

Thomas Tuchel’s side started their 2026 World Cup campaign with a 4-2 victory against Croatia. England then finished top of Group L following a 0-0 draw with Ghana and a 2-0 triumph against Panama.

The European outfit came from behind to defeat DR Congo 2-1 in the round of 32. England conceded after seven minutes before Harry Kane scored twice in the closing stages.

Predicted Starting Lineups & Team News

Mexico (4-3-3): Raul Rangel; Jorge Sanchez, Cesar Montes, Johan Vasquez, Jesus Gallardo; Gilberto Mora, Erik Lira, Luis Romo; Roberto Alvarado, Raul Jimenez, Julian Quinones

Mexico have no injuries or suspensions.

Attacker Julian Quinones is expected to start. The Al Qadsiah player has three goals and one assist in his last four World Cup appearances.

England (4-2-3-1): Jordan Pickford; Nico O’Reilly, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Djed Spence; Declan Rice, Elliot Anderson; Noni Madueke, Jude Bellingham, Marcus Rashford; Harry Kane

Reece James and Jarell Quansah have missed the last two games due to injury. The defensive pair are injury doubts for the Mexico match.

Declan Rice was subbed off late against DR Congo. Thomas Tuchel provided a positive update on the midfielder’s fitness and said, “There is no injury. I think he will recover. He was just in pain and I hope he is right. It’s more neural pain.”
