Ghana Women vs Cameroon Women WAFCON Preview

Ghana and Cameroon are aiming to build on their winning starts to the Women's Africa Cup of Nations when they meet in their second Group D clash on Friday.

The Black Queens’ overall form has been solid lately, and they should get the better of their rivals, who have looked erratic in recent times.

Key Stats

  • Ghana are unbeaten in nine of their last 10 matches in all competitions.
  • Ghana have won eight of their last 10 matches in all competitions.
  • Ghana are unbeaten in nine of their last 10 matches against Cameroon.
  • Cameroon have lost four of their last seven matches in all competitions.

Ghana with the Edge

Ghana have four wins and five draws, while Cameroon have been victorious just once in the last 10 matches. The most recent meeting was a friendly back in 2021, with the Black Queens claiming a 2-0 victory.

Smooth Sailing for Ghana

Ghana had a smooth start to their WAFCON campaign, claiming a 2-0 victory over Cape Verde. Doris Boaduwaa opened the scoring in the first half while an own goal from Eleia Vieira after the break sealed the win.

That result is not particularly surprising as Ghana came into the tournament in superb form. Kim Bjorkegren's team are unbeaten in nine of their last 10 matches in all competitions, picking up eight wins in this run.

While Ghana often look solid going forward, their defensive quality has been a pivotal part of their recent performances. They have kept clean sheets in nine of their last 10 matches across all competitions.

Cameroon Not Overly Convincing

Cameroon also made a winning start to their WAFCON campaign, picking up a 2-1 victory over Mali. Marie Ngah netted a goal in each half to see out the win before going off injured late in the game.

Alongside Ghana, Cameroon are considered favourites to progress from the group and manager Valentine Nguele will be pleased with the start. A win on Sunday will all but guarantee a place in the knockout stage.

The problem for Cameroon is that while their WAFCON start was solid, their overall form has been a bit erratic lately. The Indomitable Lionesses have lost four of their last seven matches in all competitions.

Team News and Predicted Line-ups

Ghana (4-4-2): Cynthia Konlan; Afua Bonsu Kyerewaa, Susan Duah, Portia Boakye, Benedicte Simon; Grace Asantewaa, Alice Kusi, Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah, Jennifer Cudjoe; Sharon Sampson, Doris Boaduwaa.

Sampson came off the bench for Ghana at half-time in the previous game and could earn a start on Sunday. Duah is expected to continue in central defence while Boaduwaa should lead the line once again.

Cameroon (4-3-3): Michaely Bihina; Ivana Yakana, Myriam Nyadjou, Easther Mayi Kith, Collete Ndzana; Achta Toko, Monique Ngock, Charlene Meyong; Rose Bella, Nina Ngueleu, Grace Mendoua.

Ngah went off injured late in Cameroon's opening game and is likely to miss this clash. Ngueleu is expected to replace the forward while Nyadjou and Mayi Kith should continue in central defence.
