Ange-Yoan Bonny was born in France and was a French U21 international before switching allegiances. Now he lines up for Ivory Coast against his home country.
Bonny came through the France youth system, was capped seven times by France U20 and moved up to the France U21s.
On Thursday in Nantes he walks out against the senior France team in orange as France take on Ivory Coast in a pre-World Cup friendly.
Bonny's switch was confirmed in February 2026 when the Inter Milan forward declined a senior France approach and filed his eligibility paperwork to represent Ivory Coast through his parents. Emerse Faé fast-tracked him into the squad and he has been in the starting XI ever since.
It will be the first time Bonny faces France in a competitive shirt when lining up at the Stade de la Beaujoire - and several of his former France Under-21 teammates are in the opposite dressing room too.
Why Ivory Coast and Not France?
With France's forward line for the World Cup containing Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Marcus Thuram, Bradley Barcola, Desire Doue, Jean-Philippe Mateta, Rayan Cherki, and Michael Olise, Bonny would have been ninth in the queue.
Ivory Coast offered an immediate starting spot and he jumped at the chance. Bonny started both March friendlies for Ivory Coast and was on the scoresheet in the 4-0 win over South Korea.
The 22-year-old has the centre-forward role at Inter when Lautaro Martinez rests, and he has the same role for the Elephants. France simply could not match that minutes guarantee.

Bonny has four goals in five caps for Ivory Coast since his debut in March. He scored against South Korea, scored twice in qualifying, and won the penalty that beat Scotland 1-0.
His underlying numbers are strong with Bonny averaging 0.42 non-penalty xG per 90 in Serie A this season for Inter Milan, who used him in 18 league matches - 11 of which he started.
The link-up with Martinez sharpened his finishing and his hold-up play improved across the season.
